Recipe for Aunt Bess's Barbecue Sauce


1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup butter or margarine
2 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon red pepper
1 slice lemon; thick
1 slice onion; thick
1/2 cup catsup


Combine all ingredients except catsup in a heavy medium saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, for 20 mins. Remove from heat; discard lemon and onion slices, and stir in catsup. YIELD: 1 1/2 cups

NOTES: You may add a tiny drop of liquid smoke if you like a smokey flavor
